This has been a very difficult year for all of us. It has challenged us in all possible ways. People often say that overcoming challenges makes us stronger. I believe overcoming challenges makes us more faithful. Faithful that there is always hope. To start 2021 on a hopeful tone, I invited Daymé Arocena to join on UNICEF's mission to bring hope that no children die from preventable causes and every child has a safe and healthy childhood.
Daymé Arocena is a singer, a songwriter, and a band director. At her young age, she has become an inspiration for many artists and people around the world. After working at a big band directed by Joaquín Betancourt, she created a woman jazz band called Alami who won the Juno 2015 award on the best jazz album category at the Jazz Plaza festival. In two years, Daymé has released 4 albums: Cubafonía (2017), One Takes (2016), The Havana Cultura Sessions (2015), and Nueva Era (2015). She has been called "the most breakout talent that we've seen out of Cuba in recent years" by Nate Chinen, NPR Music. NPR has also called her: "a magical mash-up of The Queen of Latin Music, Celia Cruz, and The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin." The New York Times has said: "when she sang, she had a beaming, irrepressible smile, the expression of a virtuoso who knew she was pushing each song toward gleefully unexpected places."
This is not the first time Daymé has supported UNICEF's mission, and this time she will perform songs of her albums for 40 min. All funds raised will go directly to UNICEF USA to support Global Health and Immunization programs. UNICEF works in more than 190 countries and territories to put children first. UNICEF has helped save more children's lives than any other humanitarian organization by providing health care and immunization, clean water and sanitation, nutrition, education, emergency relief and more. By purchasing one ticket, you can help to vaccinate 54 children and save them from a life-threatening disease.
Join us on January 16th (Saturday) at 2pm to a journey over the Cuban real maravilloso world than only Daymé Arocena's powerful voice can take us to.
