About this Event

Join NextGen DC for a Virtual Book Club! While we are practicing our best social distancing, we are reading The Undocumented Americans by Karla Cornejo Villavicencio. On Saturday, April 25, we will be getting together via Zoom conference to discuss this book and UNICEF's work. Dial in to join the conversation with your fellow NextGen members. Please note this event is BYOB (Bring Your Own Brunch)!

Event participation is FREE, however, we are also collecting donations for UNICEF's life-saving work. This is an especially challenging time while countries all over the world are working to fight COVID-19. UNICEF has been recognized by Charity Navigator as one of the top organizations responding to the pandemic. You can learn more about UNICEF's response to COVID-19 here. Please consider purchasing one of the Donation Tickets based on UNICEF's inspired gifts below:

1. Donate $18 for Tarps to Shelter Children and Families to provide a heavy-duty plastic tarp to help protect families from the elements.

2. Donate $20 for Exercise Books to Keep Kids Learning which provides 50 exercise books for classrooms.

3. Donate $20 for Portable Vaccine Carrier (Temperature Regulation) to keep vaccines at the right temperature, especially in hot climates.

4. Donate $58 for Emergency Family Water and Hygiene Kit to provide basic essential supplies like water buckets, soap, etc.

5. Donate $5 for UNICEF! We appreciate all your support and every dollar counts!

About The Undocumented Americans

"Writer Karla Cornejo Villavicencio was on DACA when she decided to write about being undocumented for the first time using her own name. It was right after the election of 2016, the day she realized the story she’d tried to steer clear of was the only one she wanted to tell.  So she wrote her immigration lawyer’s phone number on her hand in Sharpie and embarked on a trip across the country to tell the stories of her fellow undocumented immigrants—and to find the hidden key to her own.

Looking beyond the flashpoints of the border or the activism of the DREAMers, Cornejo Villavicencio explores the lives of the undocumented—and the mysteries of her own life. She finds the singular, effervescent characters across the nation often reduced in the media to political pawns or nameless laborers. The stories she tells are not deferential or naively inspirational but show the love, magic, heartbreak, insanity, and vulgarity that infuse the day-to-day lives of her subjects."
